What better way to discuss Brain Selznick’s Wonderstruck than to go to a museum?
We met at the Holland Public Museum for our October book club and had a wonderful time learning more about the museum, looking closely at artifacts, creating our own mystery boxes and talking about the book.
When we got to the museum, we were given notebooks and were told to use only writing as a way to communicate with others (some of the boys wore headphones to help create the feeling of hearing loss). The boys had a lot of fun writing notes to each other as they toured the museum, just like Ben does with his new friend.
A highlight of our time at the museum was being able to learn more about the museum’s collections by one of their delightful docents.
We then got to create our own mystery boxes, have some delicious book-related food, and talk more about the book.
Another highlight was hearing about the special objects that each boy brought with him. Rocks, teeth, bones, toys…it was fun to delight in the stories of each of these objects and the memories that they held.
A huge thank you to the Greens and Baumans for organizing and leading such an amazing book club!
