“I never had a brain until Freak came along and let me borrow his for a while, and that’s the truth, the whole truth. The unvanquished truth, is how Freak would say it”
So begins Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, our December book club book.
Maxwell Kane, the book’s protagonist, befriends Kevin Avery, an extremely intelligent boy who has Morquio syndrome. Together they become Freak the Mighty and go on many quests and adventures. Max becomes Kevin’s legs and Kevin helps Max feel smart.
Our book club went on its own quest!
We went on a word quest to find hidden words in the church basement, big words that Freak would have loved using. After finding the words, we defined them in ways that Freak would have enjoyed. So much fun!
And then we ate…as we always do at book club.
Hotdogs with 3 kinds of mustard and 2 kinds of relish (a la Max style), potato salad and hot chocolate AND Russell Stover chocolates IN THE BOX!
May we all experience a friendship like Max and Kevin’s. May we celebrate words and creativity and imagination. May we never define people (or ourselves) by their pasts or limitations.
Thanks Honeycutts and Stewarts for leading such a great book club!
