The Giver (November book club)

“Our people made that choice, the choice to go to Sameness.”

“The life where nothing was ever unexpected. Or inconvenient. Or unusual. The life without colour, pain or past.”

This month, we joined The Big Read Lakeshore in reading The Giver. Wow. What a book.

After hearing our results from an online career test, we were assigned community jobs: laborers, instructors, storytellers, and food preparers.

We then played a trivia contest about the book (moms vs sons) and had great fun discussing some of the book’s themes and watching clips from the film version of The Giver.

Our food this month? Red apples and a trays of “sameness” colorless food.

“The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It’s the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.” Grateful to have shared so many wonderful memories with this group of boys and moms…

Grateful for the choices we get to make, for music and art and color, for the gift of grandparents and families, for being able to love and be loved.
